October 2017

Recently, Gerry, my mother n' law passed away. When she left I was not truly aware of just exactly how much would go with her. All the love, kind words, jokes, eye rolling, talk about the Blue Jays, visits to our gardens and her visit for family gatherings and events, gone. It really leaves a void that can't be explained. The energy that was once vibrant and the heart of the family is just not there. While I get that life is a cycle and is it's own journey for each and everyone of us, it still has an incredible impact on those close to that person.
This Quilt was handmade by Gerry and one of the few items that I chose to keep as a memory of all that Gerry was and always will be to me. When I see this quilt it makes me think of a time when Gerry would have been working on it. No doubt quilting with other woman at the same time, laughing and telling stories, drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes. I believe if this quilt could talk it would have many stories to tell, not just during the crafting process, but all the times it was used; When someone was sick, it helped them to feel well, when someone was tired it brought sleep, when someone was down it lifted them up, When grandchildren came to visit and need a rest from play, it gave them security. On chilly nights watching a good movie, it gave cuddly warmth, In times of broken hearts it brought peace, In times of heated discussions it brought comfort. If I think about all the people this quilt has touched in one way or another it makes it very special. So in the end the truth is Gerry lives on through this quilt, when I feel sad for missing her, I can go to her quilt and feel her love, her feisty energy as if she were right there with me. My only hope is that this quilt will have just as many good stories and comfort from my life to pass on to others as it has for Gerry.

Recipe for the month

Homemade "Rolo" Knock-Offs
by Angela Liddon

prep time 10 minutes
18 bites
This  no bake ,vegan, Gluten Free treat is sure to please all of your special Halloween trick or treaters
For the Caramel
200grams pitted soft Medjool dates(about 11 large)
1/2 Tbsp peanut butter (or other nut or seed butter)
pinch of fine grain sea salt

For the Chocolate coating
scant 1/2c dark chocolate chips
1tsp coconut oil

Garnish
Chia seeds (optional)
Halloween toothpicks- available at Party stores.

Instructions
1. Note: be sure the Medjool dates are very soft. If they are too firm soak in water to soften before using and drain well. Process pitted dates in a food processor until a sticky paste forms. Add the nut butter along with the pinch of salt. Process until combined. The mixture will be super sticky, but this is a good thing.
2.Scoop out the sticky mixture into a bowl and freeze for about 10 minutes. Chilling makes the caramel easier to shape into balls. After chilling, lightly wet your fingers and shape caramel into small balls to make about 18 balls.
3. place balls back into the freezer for about another 10 minutes on a parchment lined plate or pan. Meanwhile, melt chocolate chips along with 1 tsp of coconut oil on the stove top over low heat. When 2/3 of the chips are melted, remove from the heat and stir until all chips are melted.
4. Remove caramel balls from the freezer and dunk each ball into the melted chocolate, one at a time. I find using two small spoons helps to roll them around in the chocolate mixute to coat evenly. Tap off excess chocolate and place back onto parchment -lined plate. Sprinkle with chia seeds and stick a Halloween related toothpick into each.

Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep

by Mary Elizabeth Frye
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.
