Until recently it was believed that the skin was an impenetrable barrier. Today we know that products ingredients can penetrate the skin depending on their molecular size and chemical components. By definition, a cosmetic product remains on the surface of the skin but does not reach the skin's dermis and is not absorbed by the blood capillaries. How do advanced facial treatments work?
Enzyme peels work to breakdown keratin in the dead cells on the surface of the skin. They generally produce a more even peeling of the cell build up and help to slightly dilate the follicle openings which make extraction much easier. Light chemical peels which include glycolic, lactic and salicylic acid work by dissolving the lips in the pore opening which bond to the cells on the surface of the skin like cement. Light chemical peels only exfoliate the outer most layer of the epidermis. This causes a sloughing action in the superficial layers of the skin resulting in the regeneration of new cells. These cells are healthier because they have not been exposed to the environmental elements. Thus over time the skin becomes smoother, more youthful and radiant. Continued treatments of light chemical peels will soften lines and wrinkles and allow treatment products to penetrate into the base of the epidermis as well as stimulate the dermis to help such conditions as; premature aging, hyper pigmentation, acne, surface scarring and sensitive skin.
