A stool that could tell a thousand stories
This past weekend I went home to visit my mother and stepfather in the valley. My parents own about 5 acres of ocean front land in Upper Clements. My mother has single handedly, with some help from my stepdad, planted and grown incredible gardens all over the property around their home. Add this into an ocean view and you can understand why I feel like it's a piece of paradise.
So why the photo of the bench and stool you ask?
Well my mom wanted to repaint an old bench to put under some beautiful birch trees in her gardens. I offered to paint it since my mom is not always able to do this kind of stuff as easily as she used to. My mom has Parkinson's, but not one to ever be a victim she was determined to help out. When she got weak and tired she asked my stepdad to bring her a stool for her to sit on. Most would have gone inside to lay down for a bit, but not my mom. We were having way to much fun painting and chatting.
When my stepdad brought out the old green farm stool I asked my mom about its history. I learned that it was her grandfather's milking stool for when he milked the cows. She remembers it well as she was brought up on the farm by her grandparents, the very same property of where she now lives. She figures the stool is at least 100 years old or more. I remember this stool from my childhood as well. It was used for the "at home haircuts" and kneeling on to get our hair washed in the kitchen sink. If we had company and not enough chairs it was always handy for an extra seat.
As a teenager I used this chair in my bedroom at my drawing desk. I would spend hours sitting on it and drawing my life away.
I just love that this stool has so much history and if it could talk I'm sure there would be many of good stories it could share, probably some sad ones as well.
My stepdad had asked me some time ago what would I like from the house when they are no longer living. The green stool was my reply. He was really surprised by that, but for me the memories and history that this stool holds are priceless. Whenever I see it and use it I feel connected to my family history.
As I was cleaning up from painting and my mom had finally given in to being too tired to continue and went inside the house, I noticed a hot pink fuchsia finger print on the top of the stool. My first thought was oh no, I spoiled the old stool! But now I realize I did not, I just added another wonderful story to it's history. And when it is passed down to me and I see the fuchsia print I will be reminded of the fun day I have with my mom painting it.
